CDC seeks comment on NNDSS revision adding up to 50 Tribal Nations

Centers for Disease Control and PreventionOffice of Management and BudgetConsultationOct 5, 2026

Check: CDC's National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS, the national disease-reporting system) revision would let up to 50 Tribal Nations submit case data directly to CDC, and public comment is open for 30 days from the 2026-10-05 publication.

What it does

Tribal governments that choose to take part would voluntarily send case notification data (reports of notifiable diseases) directly to CDC rather than through a state or territorial health department. The revision also adds two conditions under standardized surveillance, new leprosy data elements, and additional data elements for all conditions, and it raises the estimated annual burden to 33,471 hours for 457 respondents. Comments go to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB, the federal office that reviews information collections under the Paperwork Reduction Act, or PRA).

Why it matters for tribal funding

Tribes eligible. Tribes or Native organizations are among those who can apply or are covered, alongside others.

Who it covers: Tribal governments.
